Ca y est deuxième étape pour un étalon après l'agrément: sa première saillie!

C'est chose faite pour Nino qui se comporte en vrai gentleman avec Zara!

Au Portugal la monte se fait en liberté, à peu près 10 jours après la mise bas, et quand la jument accepte le mâle. On peut aussi bien entendu attendre les prochaines chaleurs plus éloignées. Mais en général on ne perd pas de temps au Portugal!

Les saillies se font rapprochées au début (2+/3 premiers jours ) puis tous les deux jours (car les spermatozoides restent actifs 48h) jusqu'à ce que la jument n'accepte plus le mâle. Si la jument continue d'accepter le mâle longtemps, il vaut mieux faire une échographie pour voir les stades folliculaires sur les ovaires. Si l'ovulation est proche on peut la déclencher par une injection de gonadotropine, si non on peut relancer un cycle de chaleur avec des prostaglandines.

Il ne faut pas laisser sauter le mâle s'il n'est pas prêt. En général la saillie en elle-même dure très peu de temps, pas plus de 30 secondes. Pour Nino, ça dure un peu plus il aime bien rester, il faut le tirer pour qu'il descende!

Les cordes que vous pouvez voir sont destinées à protéger l'étalon si la jument ne l'accepte pas car elle rue très fort. Quand la jument est en chaleur (comme Zara sur la video) ça n'arrive pas. Il y a des coussinets de protection pour ne pas blesser la jument derrière les paturons. En cas de problème on peut tout de suite détacher les cordes qui lient les postérieurs à l'encolure par un système d'attache similaire à celui que l'on fait pour éviter que les chevaux tirent au renard.

Immédiatement après la saillie on peut faire trottiner la jument pour éviter que le sperme ressorte.

En suite échographie entre 16 et 21 jours pour voir s'il la jument est pleine.

Et voilà, dans 11 mois et 10 jours environ le poulain naîtra!

Zara a été saillie pour la dernière fois le 22 avril.

Le 17 mai, une échographie a confirmé qu'elle était pleine de Nino!
